The crazies
Not sure if this qualify as a zombie movie as it's about the water supply in a small town being tainted with some experimental military chemical, resulting to the residents there becoming crazy and killing each other, hence, they are called the crazies. The actions are quite average and only a few gory or brutal scenes. The only impressive thing is the nuclear explosion in the end but quite watcheable. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Kick Ass
Story about a former police officer looking for revenge after he was framed for some crime. Together with his trained-to-kill very young daughter, both of them seek to sabotage the operation of an organised gang. If you are bored with the ordinary action movies, this one will provide a good alternative as most of the action is done by the young girl, the killings done by her are quite brutal as well. There is also another teenage trying to be a superhero but didn't quite make it which will provide the humour in this movie. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Children of men
This movie is set in the future, year 2027 to be exact, where the whole world is in turmoil and UK is the favourite country for refugees. Hence, the UK government is going all out to stamp out illegal immigrants. Due to some condition, everyone in this world is no longer able to make babies and suddenly, there is one refugee in UK found pregnant. The hero in this movie is supposed to protect the pregnant refugee from both the authorities and opportunists trying to make a quick buck from the baby. This movie is not really action packed but each of the action scenes are realistically made and not of typical Hollywood style. I'll rate this at 7/10.
The unthinkable
This movie is about terrorism where 3 nuclear bombs have been placed at 3 different major cities in US. The culprit is caught but the military has to interrogate him anyway possible to find out the location of the bombs. This whole movie revolves around the interrogation technique used to crack the terrorist and also the need to balance between morality in interrogation versus avoidance of a crisis. Overall, I'm not impressed as the movie does not show the whole brutal process of the interrogation, probably toned down to avoid criticism. You get more brutal scenes from movies like Saw. The ending is a bit unexpected though. I'll rate this at 7/10.
The book of Eli
The story is set in the future where everything is destroyed due to some blast or disaster, no basic facilities at all and of course, religion is wiped out by some crazy politicians before that. So, there is this guy having probably the only remaining bible in the world which he is supposed to deliver it to a place where the people there will make duplication of it. There will be some guys he met during his journey, average action scenes, some killings look brutal but too much talking and the movie is made too long without any purpose. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Shutter Island
This is a mystery movie about police investigating missing psycho patient held in an island. Not much of action, lots of talking but an unexpected ending, very much like the other movie I watched recently, The Others. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Just another pandora box
This a HK movie, made as the humour version of The Red Cliff movie. Unfortunately, I don't find this movie humourous at all, or rather, the humour is more catered for children. Unlike Meet the Spartans which at least able to produce the humour side of 300, this movie fail miserably. I'll rate this at 5/10.
The fourth kind
Story about alien kidnapping in Alaska. This movie also claimed to have adapted real recorded scenes on interview with real victim, which look quite real but could be acted up to boost the sales. Overall, nothing scary, it's more like a movie made to depict what happen claimed to have happen to woman who has lost her daughter, kidnapped by alien. But the camera failed to capture anything when the alien is present, so nothing to see. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Womb ghost
This is a HK movie about the restless spirit of the aborted children coming back to haunt the people that caused the abortion. Overall, it doesn't really scare me up, the scare tactics been used many times in other movies and the sudden scare scenes are very much expected by me. But the message of the movie is very educating as it may probably make one think twice before aborting and the importance of effective contraceptive. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Avatar
People have been talking about it since last year but I only got the chance to watch it recently when the clear copy is available for download. Not going to elaborate on the storyline, just some comment. Overall, not extremely impressed with the movie, it's a mixture of real and graphical scenes but failed to make me feel 'wow' about it. The storyline is different, in a way, it criticise the human greed nature which also fall nicely at times like this when everyone are going green. But I don't really feel blend into the movie, especially when it's too graphical. I'll rate this at 7/10.

The descent 2
I have watched the first part many years ago when I first got my dvd player and this is the sequel to it which is able to maintain the standard I expected on this movie. This movie is about a bunch of women that went for a cave exploration that had gone wrong when they encountered a bunch human-like creatures in the cave that eat humans and able to climb walls. There was a sole survivor in part 1 and this sequel is about mounting a rescue team, if there is any survivor left to rescue at all. Well, the team is faced with the same creatures and similar to part 1, plenty of skull cracking kills and blood gushing scenes coupled with a few sudden scare tactics. You know, it's dark in the cave and these creatures can appear all of a sudden. I'll rate this at 7/10.

The stepfather
This is a murder movie about a maniac who targets recently divorced woman with children. The amazing thing is this maniac is good in pretending to be a good guy to blend into the woman's family and her children well, especially if that woman is in need of a man in the house. This movie doesn't have much action but you will stay on to find out how this maniac is unmasked in the end and his outcome. However, the ending is rather expected for me as it's getting common for US movies to have an ending reserved for a sequel, maybe because it can be sold off as a franchise later. I'll rate this at 7/10.

72 tenants
This is a movie produced by TVB, a company specialised in producing dramas in HK. This movie in a way actually shows how influential TVB is in HK judging from how TVB is capable of getting almost all the top artists in HK to play a small role in this movie. This is a comedy movie produced specially for the Chinese New Year celebration this year with some musical dancing scenes included, something not commonly done in HK movies. Overall, quite entertaining but failed to make me LOL like those CSC classics and some of the humour requires deep understanding of the cantonese dialect. The CNY song at the end is also very creative. I'll rate this at 6/10.

The others
This is a not so horror but mysterious movie with lots of talking and very little sudden scare scene. It is however saved by a very unexpected ending and probably the first time I've seen a horror movie with such storyline. I'll rate this at 5/10.
Bad blood
This is a HK mafia movie about internal tussle within a gang to be the leader when its existing leader has been caught in PRC and executed. This movie is packed with impressive hand to hand & melee combat fight from not just one but various actors and actresses. Unfortunately. the storyline is not very thought out causing certain fights to look unnecessary or illogical. For example, why would the PRC police waste their breath chasing the gang and engage for hand fight when they could easily finish them off with guns. I'll rate this at 6/10.
The sniper
This is a HK movie about a sniper team within the HK police force. This movie has portrayed some reality of sniper shooting and quite action packed. Unfortunately, the storyline doesn't flow logically like how that bad guy is able to easily procure high power sniper rifle and the helping a prisoner to escape just for his killing pleasure later. I'll rate this at 6/10.
9 Dead
This movie is about kidnap and a father's revenge on injustice done on his son. It's something like Saw but the gory effect is far from it. Heck, even the gunshots don't look real at all. But the mystery makes you wanna stay on to find out the motive of the kidnapper and why the nine persons who don't really know each other are inter related. I'll rate this at 5/10.

From Paris with love
This is an action movie about counter terrorist in Paris. Lots of gun fighting scenes but the way Travolta shoots kind of remind me of those HK movies in the 90s. Overall, quite entertaining with a lil bit of humour but not impressive. Storyline is ordinary and very much expected while the ending is just ended by one single gun shot, that's it. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Legion
Despite all the advertising hype created, this movie does not live up to my expectation at all, even though I'm quite agreeable with the message delivered in this movie. Lots of gun shooting scenes but not really impressive, the killings doesn't look brutal or gory at all and the ending is a real letdown. I was expecting the good angel to lead a bunch of humans for a free-for-all fight with the possessed humans. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Astro boy
This animation's storyline is a mixture of Iron Man and Wall E fused together. Story about a robot inventor who has lost his son, created an exact copy of his robotic son powered by a powerful 'blue thing' that can allow that robot to fly and has infinite power. Overall, very entertaining and my kids love this animation. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Possession
This is a movie about 2 brothers in love of one girl met a head on collision and it appears that they have their character and memory switched to one another. It's mysterious movie which will make you stay on to find out the ending but has no action or brutal murder scenes. More like a romantic mystery movie to me with a very different storyline. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Ninja Assassin
The storyline is similar to Hitman where boys are kidnapped to be trained as assassin, ninja style this time. This movie has managed to exceed my expectation as I believe this is the first time this Korean guy acted in an English movie, what more an action movie. Lots of blood gushing slashing scenes and flying stars like it's being shot out from a machine gun. This movie also ends with a 'bang' with impressive samurai sword fighting scene (with very realistic wound). Unfortunately, being ninja which only appear in the dark, quite a number of fight scenes in the middle are a bit unclear. I'll rate this at 7/10.
REC 2
Watched the first part earlier, this is the sequel but overall failed to take this movie to a higher level, it dipped down. Less gory scenes, storyline does not develop well especially when the few kids got pulled in to it which I find it rather illogical. The ending seems to suggest for another sequel which I think I really had enough. I'll rate this at 5/10.
14 Blades
This is an ancient Chinese movie about a bunch of executors trained to kill anyone who is not in favour of the Emperor. Donnie Yen is the head of this team. The uncle of the Emperor tried to grab the throne and steal the seal by colluding with several eunuchs within the palace by using Donnie. Overall, Donnie's barehand fight is always impressive but the others were absolutely crappy ala ancient Chinese fantasy style fighting. Come on, it's already year 2010 and nobody gonna watch such fighting style anymore. The storyline is also crappy with a few scenes being intentionally made to feature more on Zhao Wei which I think it's kinda immature. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Hitman
This is one of my favourite PC game. This movie is about a guy, bred to be an assassin from child, being set up in a mission by his own boss, I think. Quite a few action scenes only and I think the movie should have done more to show how an assassination should be done, from infiltration, hiding of weapons, execution and extraction from the scene. The whole process is not fully shown and hence, the movie doesn't appear to be realistic at all. There are also a variety of killing method not shown here. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Armored
This movie is about a bunch of security guards trying to squander some monies in transit by them but has gone wrong. Not much of action, the story a bit different but not really realistic. More like a B grade movie for me although it has actors like Jean Reno. Just another average action movie. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Up in the air
This movie is about a guy who work in a company specialised in firing workers where the bosses are too afraid to do so. This movie develops really slowly, lots of talking and unnecesary scenes. However, the scenes on firing worker are quite dramatic and you can really relate into it especially if you are an employee as well. Apart from that, this movie also shows how this guy gets to fly around and his quest to earn 10 million miles point as his personal goal. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Carriers
This movie is about an era where the world is infected with a deadly disease and has no cure for it. Although there is not much of action in this movie, it has successfully depicted how human has to be selfish and kill each other, all for survival and resources. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Planet terror
This is another zombie movie. Unlike other zombie movies, this one was supergross, guaranteed to make you puke and humorous at the same time, definitely a better watch than Zombieland. The gun fight scenes were a bit unrealistic as it was exaggerated in some way, probably for humour purpose. The killings were brutal and sudden, may jolt you up. The best part was, I really wonder how the A Go Go dancer can act without a leg when it was clearly shown at the beginning that she has a real leg and dancing with them, really unbelievable special effects. I'll rate this at 8/10.

Hot fuzz
This is a movie about an overperforming police in London being transferred to a small town. What makes this movie special is that we have humour, gory & brutal murders, mystery and gun fight actions all blended together in one movie. Of course, the gun fight scenes were not realistic for today standard because it was supposed to be humourous. Anyway, it was still entertaining throughout the entire movie while the storyline also developed unpredictably at the same time, something I don't expect from an unknown underdog movie. I'll rate this at 8/10.

Orphan
This movie is about a family adopted a girl and soon find that the adopted girl is not what they think it is. Can't reveal too much or it may not be surprising to you anymore. Suffice to say that the storyline of this movie is similar to another HK movie I watched recently called "Murderer". Not sure who is copying who. However, one thing for sure, quite a number of brutal, gory killing scenes and the best of all, unlike other movies, this one is committed by a young girl. Much better than the HK version. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Iron Man
After some disappointment watching superheroes like Hellboy or Dare Devil, I seldom watch superhero movies anymore except for those well known ones like Spiderman. However, this movie is a lot more better that I expected. It's about a genius weapon designers that has created an armoured battle suit for himself which can even fly. This movie is packed with action and the weapons shown is quite impressive and original. But the ending is a bit disappointing and unrealistic. I'll rate this at 7/10.
In Bruges
This is a movie about an assassin hiding out in a small town in Belgium called Bruges after accidentally killed a kid during the assassination of its target. The movie is boring, lots of talking and only some shooting scenes at the end. The scenes showing the beauty of those medieval buildings in Bruge don't help much. However, this movie delivers an important message that is quite applicable in our daily lives i.e. don't jump into conclusion based on what you hear or see. Sometime, there is more than meet the eyes and it takes you to be in that other person's shoe to understand the other person's situation. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Hotel Rwanda
This movie is about a manager of a 4 star hotel in Rwanda using its wits, bargaining skill and connection to protect people sheltering at that hotel during the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi in the 90s. Although there was not much action from this movie, it was really amazing how the manager able to protect so many people including his family during such turbulent time. Apart from that, this movie also shown the ugliness of conflicts and casualties, the power of media in inciting hatred and the selfishness of the world superpowers if there is no benefit in helping. By the way, the Hutu and Tutsi were of same skin colour but somehow being differentiated by its colonialists, using the same old 'divide & conquer' rule. I'll rate this movie at 8/10.

Blood diamond
This movie delivered a very punchy and provoking message about diamonds; how it has been used by rebels in Africa to fund their weapons purchase, how rebels exploit villagers to mine diamonds for them (apart from brutally killing them), the recruitment of child soldiers by rebel, how the price of diamonds been kept artificially high and the possibility of that diamond on the ring you are wearing now could be tainted with the blood of Africans. The ending is quite touching as well, like what Leonardo did in the Titanic movie. Apart from diamonds, the movie has also successfully portray the magnificent natural beauty of Africa. I'll rate this at 8/10.
Blood creek
A horror movie about a Nazi travelled to US before WW2 to search for rune stones which is capable of giving that Nazi immortality and power to raise the dead. A guy who was held in captivity by the Nazi managed to escape and went back for revenge. Got a few gory and brutal killing scenes but overall although the storyline is a bit different, it just an average movie. I'll rate it at 6/10.

Futurama: Bender Big Score
I'm always a fan of Futurama series so is this movie. However, this movie can be a bit confusing especially for someone who did not follow the series. This movie is about time travel and how the aliens scammed human the entire earth (reminiscent of some scamming scheme taking place in the internet now). The jokes are typical Futurama and quite entertaining. I'll rate this at 7/10.
The Hurt Locker
This is an Iraq war movie. Unlike other war movies which usually feature scenes on seiging or holding a line, this one is about a team of bomb dispersal unit, specialised in deactivating bombs made by terrorist in Iraq. Throughout the entire movie, there are various action scenes including a battle with snipers at an open desert. The battle scenes are quite realistic and nerve tauntening at the same time especially when neutralising bombs, it's a very fragile situation indeed and also susceptible to sniper attack from any buildings within the city. I'll rate this at 7/10.
The banquet
This movie is about a throne struggle that happen once upon of time in ancient China. The sword fight scenes were brilliant, artistic and different. Same goes to the costume, setting and armour worn by the army. The storyline is also unpredictable while the ending is a bit of letdown. I was expecting the prince to lead an army for a final charge to get back the throne. But the soundtrack was nice. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Full metal jacket
This is a Vietnam war movie. The first half shows the training undergone before going to Nam. The second half shows the duty at Nam. Long and boring movie, not much of gun fighting action, just talking and walking around a war torn city. A battle with a sniper scene. I'll rate this at 5/10.
Redacted
This is an Iraq war movie about a bunch of soldiers getting worn out having to serve at that war torn country. Not much of action or gun fighting scenes, lots of talking in the middle, a few explosions and a stupid rape scene at the end. I'll rate this at 4/10.
Borat
This is an award winning comedy which poke fun at the Americans' fear on terrorist (or anyone that look like a terrorist) and also the undeveloped country called Kazakhstan. The jokes are original, unexpected and able to make me laugh throughout the whole movie. I'll rate this at 8/10.
Sunday, February 21, 2010
The Assembly
This is a war movie made by China depicting a small unit of ill-equipped communist army holding the line against the US equipped KMT army. All the action happen in the first half of movie while the second half is all talking and the movie is quite long. I'll rate this at 6/10
Inglorious basterds
This is another Hitler assassination movie, similar to Valkyrie but with some added brutal killing and gory scenes, as expected from Tarantino. However, the movie is a bit too long, there are too much talking and not much action in the middle and only towards the last 10 minutes, I felt some suspense on whether their plan succeed or not. It's a war movie but without much gunshot action scene. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Thirst
This is a Korean vampire movie, about a priest ended up becoming a vampire after a failed medical experimentation he volunteered to join. Some reviewers recognise this as a Korean version of the Twilight movie, with some added soft porn and a sad ending. However, the movie is a bit dragged for too long, too difficult to follow as the scenes were jumping here and there and the lead actor is not as good looking as the one in Twilight. I'm sure there are better looking ones in Korea. I'll rate this at 6/10.
(500) Days of Summer
What could be more torturing than watching a boring romantic movie like this and worst of all, it has no humour added into it. I think some HK romantic movies like Tempting Heart is more touching than this. I'll rate it at 4/10.

Accident
This movie is about a bunch of assassin make their living killing people by faking planned accidents. Although the storyline of this movie quite different among the recently released movies in HK, it has much talking (and spying scenes), but not much of action or killing. The planned accidents also look too easy and unrealistic. The ending although is unexpected, is not spectacular either. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Bodyguard and assassin
This is a history based movie about Dr Sun Yat Sen visit to Hong Kong where the revolutionists were trying to protect him from the assassins sent by the Qing government. Although this movie is packed with fighting scenes, I'm not really impressed with the martial arts featured here, I mean, I've seen many Donnie Yen movies and think he can do better than this. While Leon Lai fighting scene doesn't really show much detail, probably using a stunt man for that. As an audience, the movie failed to pull me to the democracy struggle during the era or the sacrifices made. The ending is nothing impressive either. No touching speech as well. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
This is really fantastic animation movie. Although it's animation, it's equally entertaining for adults, creative storyline about a fox and how it has outfoxed farmers to get food, an Ocean's Eleven equivalent movie in animal based animation format. Well, the story in some ways may be a lil bit exaggerated and illogical but I'm sure I don't mind rewatching this again and again. It really deserve the high ratings in IMDB, for me, I'll rate it at 8/10.

Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay
This is actually a comedy which poke fun at the Americans insane phobia on terrorism and Muslims. This movie is also filled with some soft porn jokes ala American Pie style which is the kind I prefer. Quite entertaining overall and I'll rate this at 8/10.
Slumdog millionaire
Although this is an award winning movie, surprisingly, it's originally made in Indian language so you gotta rely on the subs to understand the story. And the story really deliver strong message about how serious poverty is in India, how Indian muslims are discriminated in India and how lucky that guy is in winning the prize money due to his past experience. A movie with very unique storyline, with some added romance ala Bollywood style. I guess this is the only Indian movie that I ever love and will never forget. I'll rate it at 8/10
Crash
This is an award winning movie which deliver a strong message about racism in America. This movie really changed the impression that I once had on US, how advanced this country is and that it should not have any racism at all. A movie with very good storyline and unpredictable ending. I'll rate it at 8/10.
Drag me to hell
This movie is about a bank employee got cursed by a gypsy woman for not accepting some request from that woman, being a bank borrower. The storyline is kind of predictable to me but this movie uses quite a lot of sudden scare tactics that may jerk you up coupled with some gory scenes as well. I'll rate it at 7/10 although many reviewers place a high rating on this movie.
Case 39
This movie is about an evil child capable of hacking into another person's mind and controlling their thoughts. It doesn't use much sudden scare tactics like other horror movies but the horror comes from the story itself and your curiosity to stay on the movie and see how the lead actress overcome the child. I'll rate it at 7/10.
Pandorum
This is a sci fi movie about humankind migrating to another planet due to inhabitable condition. Some humans in the space ship evolved into another creature and fighting within the ship. Actually the creature looks much like those used in another movie, if I'm not mistaken, The Descent, Wrong Turn or The Hills have Eyes. Average fighting scenes but not much of gory scenes. I'll give a rating of 6/10.

No country for old men
This is an award winning movie, the storyline is a bit different, develops slowly but in an artistic manner, like the usual Tarantino way, and also unpredictably. Unlike Kill Bill, it doesn't have a lot of blood gushing killing scenes but this time, it shows some new way of killing people. This movie also uses lots of cowboy slang so, the subtitle better be good. I'll rate this at 7/10.
Zombieland
Another zombie movie but this one appears to be more humorous than horror. However, its humour doesn't seem to make me laugh out loud, just chuckle. I'll rate this at 6/10.
Feast trilogy
Movie about alien ended up in a bar, then a small town and killing all people except for a few. Part 1 and 2 show much killing action but part 3, it has been added with some unpredictable humour into it. And the best part is, i don't think anyone would have predicted the sole survivor at the end of the trilogy. I'll rate it at 7/10.
The last house on the left
Contrary to what i first thought, this is not a movie about haunted house but about a vacation gone wrong after encountering a bunch of bad people, something like "Lake Eden" but i still prefer the latter. In fact, this movie is kinda stretched too long, almost 2 hours, with the story developed too slowly at the beginning. A few gory scenes and much of the action is at the end. I'll rate it at 6/10.
My bloody valentine 3D
It's those type of mass murder movie. Packed with action and gory murders right from the start. Well, if you are bored with the usual kitchen knife murder used by Jason, the pick axe murder will offer you a whole new terrifying experience. I'll rate it at 8/10.
Final destination 4
The previous 3 never disappoint me and so is this. Creative and amazing dead scenes from beginning right to the end and the best of all, it's unpredictable. New killing methods have also been introduced like flying engine and tyre instead of recycling previous methods. I'll rate it at 8/10.
Saw 6
As usual, it's packed with gory scenes from beginning right to the end. But then, the storyline is kinda stale already, I mean, it's like being dragged on to justify the never ending sequel. It's kinda unlogical too for that bad guy to be able to kidnap so many people besides preparing the trap. I'll rate it at 7/10.
The uninvited (US version)
A movie about a mentally disordered girl. Not much of action or gory scenes but very good, unpredictable storyline and a very unexpected ending. I'll give a rating of 6/10 and that lead actress is kinda cute too.
Moon
A sci fi movie about cloned people being used to operate a mining station at the moon. Kinda different storyline but no action or any gory scene, story develop very slowly, overall a boring movie, rate it at 4/10.
