Orphan

This movie is about a family adopted a girl and soon find that the adopted girl is not what they think it is. Can't reveal too much or it may not be surprising to you anymore. Suffice to say that the storyline of this movie is similar to another HK movie I watched recently called "Murderer". Not sure who is copying who. However, one thing for sure, quite a number of brutal, gory killing scenes and the best of all, unlike other movies, this one is committed by a young girl. Much better than the HK version. I'll rate this at 7/10.

Iron Man

After some disappointment watching superheroes like Hellboy or Dare Devil, I seldom watch superhero movies anymore except for those well known ones like Spiderman. However, this movie is a lot more better that I expected. It's about a genius weapon designers that has created an armoured battle suit for himself which can even fly. This movie is packed with action and the weapons shown is quite impressive and original. But the ending is a bit disappointing and unrealistic. I'll rate this at 7/10.

In Bruges

This is a movie about an assassin hiding out in a small town in Belgium called Bruges after accidentally killed a kid during the assassination of its target. The movie is boring, lots of talking and only some shooting scenes at the end. The scenes showing the beauty of those medieval buildings in Bruge don't help much. However, this movie delivers an important message that is quite applicable in our daily lives i.e. don't jump into conclusion based on what you hear or see. Sometime, there is more than meet the eyes and it takes you to be in that other person's shoe to understand the other person's situation. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Hotel Rwanda

This movie is about a manager of a 4 star hotel in Rwanda using its wits, bargaining skill and connection to protect people sheltering at that hotel during the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi in the 90s. Although there was not much action from this movie, it was really amazing how the manager able to protect so many people including his family during such turbulent time. Apart from that, this movie also shown the ugliness of conflicts and casualties, the power of media in inciting hatred and the selfishness of the world superpowers if there is no benefit in helping. By the way, the Hutu and Tutsi were of same skin colour but somehow being differentiated by its colonialists, using the same old 'divide & conquer' rule. I'll rate this movie at 8/10.

Blood diamond

This movie delivered a very punchy and provoking message about diamonds; how it has been used by rebels in Africa to fund their weapons purchase, how rebels exploit villagers to mine diamonds for them (apart from brutally killing them), the recruitment of child soldiers by rebel, how the price of diamonds been kept artificially high and the possibility of that diamond on the ring you are wearing now could be tainted with the blood of Africans. The ending is quite touching as well, like what Leonardo did in the Titanic movie. Apart from diamonds, the movie has also successfully portray the magnificent natural beauty of Africa. I'll rate this at 8/10.

Blood creek

A horror movie about a Nazi travelled to US before WW2 to search for rune stones which is capable of giving that Nazi immortality and power to raise the dead. A guy who was held in captivity by the Nazi managed to escape and went back for revenge. Got a few gory and brutal killing scenes but overall although the storyline is a bit different, it just an average movie. I'll rate it at 6/10.

Futurama: Bender Big Score

I'm always a fan of Futurama series so is this movie. However, this movie can be a bit confusing especially for someone who did not follow the series. This movie is about time travel and how the aliens scammed human the entire earth (reminiscent of some scamming scheme taking place in the internet now). The jokes are typical Futurama and quite entertaining. I'll rate this at 7/10.

The Hurt Locker

This is an Iraq war movie. Unlike other war movies which usually feature scenes on seiging or holding a line, this one is about a team of bomb dispersal unit, specialised in deactivating bombs made by terrorist in Iraq. Throughout the entire movie, there are various action scenes including a battle with snipers at an open desert. The battle scenes are quite realistic and nerve tauntening at the same time especially when neutralising bombs, it's a very fragile situation indeed and also susceptible to sniper attack from any buildings within the city. I'll rate this at 7/10.

The banquet

This movie is about a throne struggle that happen once upon of time in ancient China. The sword fight scenes were brilliant, artistic and different. Same goes to the costume, setting and armour worn by the army. The storyline is also unpredictable while the ending is a bit of letdown. I was expecting the prince to lead an army for a final charge to get back the throne. But the soundtrack was nice. I'll rate this at 7/10.

Full metal jacket

This is a Vietnam war movie. The first half shows the training undergone before going to Nam. The second half shows the duty at Nam. Long and boring movie, not much of gun fighting action, just talking and walking around a war torn city. A battle with a sniper scene. I'll rate this at 5/10.

Redacted

This is an Iraq war movie about a bunch of soldiers getting worn out having to serve at that war torn country. Not much of action or gun fighting scenes, lots of talking in the middle, a few explosions and a stupid rape scene at the end. I'll rate this at 4/10.

Borat

This is an award winning comedy which poke fun at the Americans' fear on terrorist (or anyone that look like a terrorist) and also the undeveloped country called Kazakhstan. The jokes are original, unexpected and able to make me laugh throughout the whole movie. I'll rate this at 8/10.

The Assembly

This is a war movie made by China depicting a small unit of ill-equipped communist army holding the line against the US equipped KMT army. All the action happen in the first half of movie while the second half is all talking and the movie is quite long. I'll rate this at 6/10

Inglorious basterds

This is another Hitler assassination movie, similar to Valkyrie but with some added brutal killing and gory scenes, as expected from Tarantino. However, the movie is a bit too long, there are too much talking and not much action in the middle and only towards the last 10 minutes, I felt some suspense on whether their plan succeed or not. It's a war movie but without much gunshot action scene. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Thirst

This is a Korean vampire movie, about a priest ended up becoming a vampire after a failed medical experimentation he volunteered to join. Some reviewers recognise this as a Korean version of the Twilight movie, with some added soft porn and a sad ending. However, the movie is a bit dragged for too long, too difficult to follow as the scenes were jumping here and there and the lead actor is not as good looking as the one in Twilight. I'm sure there are better looking ones in Korea. I'll rate this at 6/10.

(500) Days of Summer

What could be more torturing than watching a boring romantic movie like this and worst of all, it has no humour added into it. I think some HK romantic movies like Tempting Heart is more touching than this. I'll rate it at 4/10.

Accident

This movie is about a bunch of assassin make their living killing people by faking planned accidents. Although the storyline of this movie quite different among the recently released movies in HK, it has much talking (and spying scenes), but not much of action or killing. The planned accidents also look too easy and unrealistic. The ending although is unexpected, is not spectacular either. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Bodyguard and assassin

This is a history based movie about Dr Sun Yat Sen visit to Hong Kong where the revolutionists were trying to protect him from the assassins sent by the Qing government. Although this movie is packed with fighting scenes, I'm not really impressed with the martial arts featured here, I mean, I've seen many Donnie Yen movies and think he can do better than this. While Leon Lai fighting scene doesn't really show much detail, probably using a stunt man for that. As an audience, the movie failed to pull me to the democracy struggle during the era or the sacrifices made. The ending is nothing impressive either. No touching speech as well. I'll rate this at 7/10.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

This is really fantastic animation movie. Although it's animation, it's equally entertaining for adults, creative storyline about a fox and how it has outfoxed farmers to get food, an Ocean's Eleven equivalent movie in animal based animation format. Well, the story in some ways may be a lil bit exaggerated and illogical but I'm sure I don't mind rewatching this again and again. It really deserve the high ratings in IMDB, for me, I'll rate it at 8/10.

Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay

This is actually a comedy which poke fun at the Americans insane phobia on terrorism and Muslims. This movie is also filled with some soft porn jokes ala American Pie style which is the kind I prefer. Quite entertaining overall and I'll rate this at 8/10.

Slumdog millionaire

Although this is an award winning movie, surprisingly, it's originally made in Indian language so you gotta rely on the subs to understand the story. And the story really deliver strong message about how serious poverty is in India, how Indian muslims are discriminated in India and how lucky that guy is in winning the prize money due to his past experience. A movie with very unique storyline, with some added romance ala Bollywood style. I guess this is the only Indian movie that I ever love and will never forget. I'll rate it at 8/10

Crash

This is an award winning movie which deliver a strong message about racism in America. This movie really changed the impression that I once had on US, how advanced this country is and that it should not have any racism at all. A movie with very good storyline and unpredictable ending. I'll rate it at 8/10.

Drag me to hell

This movie is about a bank employee got cursed by a gypsy woman for not accepting some request from that woman, being a bank borrower. The storyline is kind of predictable to me but this movie uses quite a lot of sudden scare tactics that may jerk you up coupled with some gory scenes as well. I'll rate it at 7/10 although many reviewers place a high rating on this movie.

Case 39

This movie is about an evil child capable of hacking into another person's mind and controlling their thoughts. It doesn't use much sudden scare tactics like other horror movies but the horror comes from the story itself and your curiosity to stay on the movie and see how the lead actress overcome the child. I'll rate it at 7/10.

Pandorum

This is a sci fi movie about humankind migrating to another planet due to inhabitable condition. Some humans in the space ship evolved into another creature and fighting within the ship. Actually the creature looks much like those used in another movie, if I'm not mistaken, The Descent, Wrong Turn or The Hills have Eyes. Average fighting scenes but not much of gory scenes. I'll give a rating of 6/10.

No country for old men

This is an award winning movie, the storyline is a bit different, develops slowly but in an artistic manner, like the usual Tarantino way, and also unpredictably. Unlike Kill Bill, it doesn't have a lot of blood gushing killing scenes but this time, it shows some new way of killing people. This movie also uses lots of cowboy slang so, the subtitle better be good. I'll rate this at 7/10.

Zombieland

Another zombie movie but this one appears to be more humorous than horror. However, its humour doesn't seem to make me laugh out loud, just chuckle. I'll rate this at 6/10.

Feast trilogy

Movie about alien ended up in a bar, then a small town and killing all people except for a few. Part 1 and 2 show much killing action but part 3, it has been added with some unpredictable humour into it. And the best part is, i don't think anyone would have predicted the sole survivor at the end of the trilogy. I'll rate it at 7/10.

The last house on the left

Contrary to what i first thought, this is not a movie about haunted house but about a vacation gone wrong after encountering a bunch of bad people, something like "Lake Eden" but i still prefer the latter. In fact, this movie is kinda stretched too long, almost 2 hours, with the story developed too slowly at the beginning. A few gory scenes and much of the action is at the end. I'll rate it at 6/10.

My bloody valentine 3D

It's those type of mass murder movie. Packed with action and gory murders right from the start. Well, if you are bored with the usual kitchen knife murder used by Jason, the pick axe murder will offer you a whole new terrifying experience. I'll rate it at 8/10.

Final destination 4

The previous 3 never disappoint me and so is this. Creative and amazing dead scenes from beginning right to the end and the best of all, it's unpredictable. New killing methods have also been introduced like flying engine and tyre instead of recycling previous methods. I'll rate it at 8/10.

Saw 6

As usual, it's packed with gory scenes from beginning right to the end. But then, the storyline is kinda stale already, I mean, it's like being dragged on to justify the never ending sequel. It's kinda unlogical too for that bad guy to be able to kidnap so many people besides preparing the trap. I'll rate it at 7/10.

The uninvited (US version)

A movie about a mentally disordered girl. Not much of action or gory scenes but very good, unpredictable storyline and a very unexpected ending. I'll give a rating of 6/10 and that lead actress is kinda cute too.

Moon

A sci fi movie about cloned people being used to operate a mining station at the moon. Kinda different storyline but no action or any gory scene, story develop very slowly, overall a boring movie, rate it at 4/10.
